I don’t sleep well that night, and by the break of dawn, I’m already pacing the hospital room, or whatever it is they call it. My mind races, and I can’t do anything to slow it down. Not only has Wilder been missing for what feels like forever, but some random person also tried to kill me yesterday.

The world is already a confusing place, and now I don’t know what to think. It’s freaking me out. Maybe the would-be killer is just crazy. I can’t even begin to fathom being important enough to be on a hit list of any sort and for any reason. Sifting through memories, I try to think of something I’ve done that would make either gangsters or vampires hate me, but nothing stands out.

So the guy who shot me was insane. That has to be all it was. Eldaren will have someone check him over and declare the poor individual out of his mind, and that will be that.

Eldaren.

Eldaren. I groan and cover my eyes in exasperation. That could be why I’m on a hit list. Word must have reached someone’s ears that the prince has a thing for me. That, or we’re back to the stranger being completely crazy.

I can’t control either of those things. I promised Eldaren I’d date him for a year, and I can’t manage some stranger’s precarious mental health.

“Stay low, and don’t attract any more attention,” I tell myself, hitting a fist into my palm. “You’re good at that.”

In the meantime, sleep is almost the last thing on my mind, regardless of the early hour, so I step out of my room. I need to move around. I need to do something.

There’s an elf standing in the hall just outside of the healing room—or whatever they call it. He steps forward when he sees me. “I’ve been assigned to guard this room. I can’t do that if you aren’t in it.”

“Sure, you can.” I wink and jerk my thumb over my shoulder. “It’s still there.”

The elf blinks, not seeing the humor. “You must remain in it.”

“Well, if you’re supposed to guard me instead of the room, you’ll just have to follow me,” I say, walking briskly down the hall. “I’m going to go find my friend.”

“Friend?” The elf trails me. It would seem that he’s decided the order he’d received was to guard me, specifically. Annoying, if predictable. If Eldaren has someone hounding me every second of every day, words will be had. I can’t abide the thought of having a babysitter all of the time.

Then again, I don’t fancy being shot by some random stranger, either.

“I don’t mind having you guard me,” I say, “just do your best to make me forget you’re there.”

“I don’t understand,” the elf replies.

He’s young. His hair is cut short, similar to Sol’s, except this elf has combed it neatly to the side. It makes his ears look bigger than normal, and I suppress a giggle. He seems less fearsome and more adorable than some of the other elves.
